On March 4th, 2022, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) announced the revision of specified insured medical equipment and their prices, which will take effect on April 1st of this fiscal year. The reduced cost of equipment with each revision is tied to lower sales for manufacturers, wholesalers, and, ultimately, the healthcare industry as a whole.
DES Prices Down 15.5% - FY 2022 Revised Prices for Medical Devices Announced
The medical materials that saw the largest decline were the coronary stent sets, with bare metal stents (general type) falling by 14.2%, (97,000 yen down from 113,000 yen), and drug-eluting stents (restenosis-suppressing type) falling by 15.5%, (136,000 yen down from 161,000 yen). Other notable decreases were for coronary guiding catheters by 12.9% (9,320 yen down from 10,700 yen) and coronary balloons (general type percutaneous coronary angioplasty catheter) by 9.9% (32,000 yen down from 35,500 yen).
On the other hand, some medical materials did not change in price, such as transcatheter prosthetic valve sets (balloon-expandable and self-expandable prosthetic valve systems) and devices in the field of structural heart disease (SHD), while the price of pump catheters for assisted circulation remained unchanged at a difference of about 1.2%. Medical equipment used for coronary arteries, peripheral arteries, SHD, and emergency cases differed by product field.
