EuroPCR 2022 – Opening Ceremony Highlights

EuroPCR is back after a 3-year absence. With COVID-19 regulations loosening and the new normal underway, EuroPCR 2022 embraced the recently developed ‘blended program’ format, which allowed participants this year to attend either on-site at the Palais des Congrès de Paris or online through PCR’s own homepage.

The co-hosts, Dr. Jean Fajadet and Dr. William Wijns, prefaced the ceremony with a warm welcome to all attendants, both on-site and online, and commended the community’s strength and resilience in the face of the global pandemic. One of the unforeseen positive outcomes has been the ability to share the learning experience unlike any other time in history, and what could have fractured the community has instead united it.

Many guests took to the stage to echo this sentiment of resilience and fortitude. such as Dr. Ferdinand Kiemeneij, who celebrated the 30th anniversary of transradial access, and Lene Kløvgaard, chairperson of the Nurses and Allied Professionals (NAPs), whose team were announced to be the recipients of this year’s ‘Andreas Gruentzig’ award. The ceremony is set to take place on Day 3 of the conference.

Among them was also Dr. Alain Cribier, the first pioneer of TAVI at the Charles Nicolle University Hospital in France, who appeared on-stage to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

On the future of TAVI Dr. Cribier summarized, “The curve of ascending procedures in the coming years is more or less exponential, so I see a bright future with the expansion of TAVI, the multiplication of centers, and lower prices that will spread in developing countries.”

The conference will continue to be held until Friday May 20, 2022.
