From the J-PCI registry, AMI patients aged 20 to 49 years had a higher risk of cardiopulmonary arrest than did older patients, and cardiopulmonary arrest was strongly associated with in-hospital death, Dr. Hirohiko Ando of Aichi Medical University and colleagues reported in the online version of JACC: Asia.
Clinical findings and in-hospital outcomes in Japanese younger AMI patients: the J-PCI registry
Twenty-three thousand nine hundred and eighty-five (11.2%) were younger patients. Compared to older (50 to 79 years) patients (189,312), younger patients were more likely to be male, to smoke, and to have dyslipidemia and single-vessel disease, and less likely to have hypertension and diabetes. Despite a favorable clinical background, younger patients were associated with higher cardiopulmonary arrest. Furthermore, cardiopulmonary arrest was strongly associated with in-hospital mortality in younger patients (OR 14.2 [95%CI 9.2-21.9]).
Dr. Ando and colleagues concluded, "Younger patients with AMI had a higher risk of cardiopulmonary arrest, and cardiopulmonary arrest was strongly associated with in-hospital mortality. The results of this study underscore the importance of primary prevention strategies for AMI in young patients."
